Entertainment Weekly is reporting that two of the STAR WARS spin offs are going to be based on Boba Fett (no surprise) and Han Solo.
Okay, I don’t have a problem with spin off films focused on some of the characters, and the list I posted was serious for the most part. But a young Han Solo movie just feels wrong. If right after A New Hope, they had decided to shoot a movie set five years earlier with Harrison Ford, I’d have said they had something. But at this point?
Just leave it alone, Lucasfilm. No one wants to see Harrison Ford recast. And to be honest, the fanbase isn’t so much interested in films based on existing characters as we are wanting to see the franchise go off in new directions. Show us the Republic a hundred years, a thousand years, four thousand years, twenty-five thousand years before the saga. Let us see the dawn of the Jedi, the formation of the Republic, the rise of the Sith, Mandalorian uprisings, more with the Nightsisters, the criminal underworld, the Clone Wars from a different perspective, the birth of the Rebellion, a different set of rebels fighting against the Empire. You know, something mostly new but somewhat familiar. And if you’re dead set on doing a young Han Solo story? I have one word for you: animation. An animated series or direct-to-video movie about young Han would probably be killer. Just keep the project away from the live-action realm, okay? Thanks.
Man, this news has kind of deflated the excitement the possibilities of new STAR WARS had built within me. I think I need to go rewatch the six Darth Maul episodes of Clone Wars again for the hundredth time…
UPDATE: This piece at Deadline gives me a little bit of hope that perhaps they won’t do a young Han movie. I still wouldn’t mind seeing it in animation, though.
