It’s been speculated on since the new movies were first announced, and overnight, Ain’t It Cool broke a story about a possible Yoda movie, but now both Disney CEO Bob Iger and the Official Star Wars website have officially announced plans for at least two standalone Star Wars movies.
One of the standalone films will be written by Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and co-writer of Return of the Jedi while the other will be penned by Simon Kinberg, writer of Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The movies will be separate from the upcoming Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, on which Kasdan and Kinberg are also consulting, and are expected to be released sometime after Episode VII. Each standalone film will focus on a specific character, and two spinoff films are currently confirmed.
Oh, what interesting days we live in. Speculation is that a new Episode will be released every other year beginning in 2015 with a standalone film filling in the gaps during the non-episode years. Meaning that we could have a total of twelve Star Wars movies in roughly eight years from now if the theory holds up. To quote C-3PO, “This is madness!”
I have my own ideas on what those standalone movies should be. In the meantime, shout off at me on Twitter @DarthChop and let me know what you think
