USA Today has revealed that Hasbro is launching a new line of 6 inch, collector-focused actions figures known as Star Wars: The Black Series.
I say, “Thank the Maker!”
A new line of highly detailed, super articulated figures could mean that the 3 3/4″ line is going back to the basics, with less articulation, more focus on play, and a cheaper price point. If that happens, and they at least maintain the quality of the sculpting at about an early-to-mid 2000s level, I’m likely to get back into collecting the main line of figures. Pricing has been the primary thing keeping me out of the hobby on a full time basis, as while I could afford to spend $10 a pop on 60 figures a year, there are so many other things I’d rather spend that money on. Get it down to $7 or so and suddenly I’m more likely to make impulse purchases.
Regardless of what happens in that scale, the fact that there are only eight figures slated in the Black Series in 2013 intrigues me. Even at $20 a pop, I’m likely to grab all eight this year, and if Hasbro doesn’t go crazy and keeps the line at around 20 figures a year, I’ll probably collect them all. Start getting too many more than that, and I’ll pick and choose based on the character. At any rate, it’s an interesting development, and one that gives me hope that the big H is rethinking their strategy.
