The First Jedi

In Legends, the first Jedi were members of an ancient and powerful force-sensitive group known as the Je’daii Order, established on the planet Tython in the galaxy’s Deep Core. The Je’daii Order was formed around 36,453 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin) and advocated for balance, believing that the Force had both a light side and a dark side.

As a precursor to the Jedi Order, the Je’daii would eventually split due to ideological differences, with those who focused more on the light side of the Force becoming what is known today as the Jedi Order.

However, in the current Star Wars canon, the first Jedi’s origins are still somewhat ambiguous. In The Last Jedi, Ahch-To is identified as the location of the first Jedi Temple, suggesting it may be the origin place of the first Jedi, but no specific individual is identified.

The First Sith

In Star Wars Legends, the Sith began as a species – the Sith – who were discovered by a group of exiled Dark Jedi on the planet Korriban following the Hundred-Year Darkness around 6,900 BBY. These fallen Jedi enslaved the Sith species and intermingled with them over centuries. The term “Sith” then became more associated with a philosophy and way of life that embraced the dark side of the Force.

The first Dark Jedi who became Sith Lords and founded the Sith Order were Ajunta Pall, who became the first Dark Lord of the Sith, and his compatriots.

In the current Disney Star Wars canon, the origins of the first Sith have been hinted at but not fully explored. Darth Bane is known as the Sith Lord who instituted the Rule of Two, but he is not the first Sith.
