With the arrival of a new Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 3 trailer, here’s the full Jedinet breakdown of what’s featured in the footage.
Lucasfilm has revealed a more detailed look at the upcoming third season of Star Wars: The Mandalorian in a thrilling new trailer that can be viewed right here. Packed with previously-unseen footage, the promotional video features numerous returning characters, familiar locations and hidden surprises. Jedinet has taken a deep dive into the new trailer for the Disney+ series and here’s the full breakdown of what we’ve discovered:
The trailer kicks off with a shot of a group of armoured Mandalorian warriors wandering across a rocky landscape. Din Djarin’s voiceover states, “Our people are scattered. Like stars in the galaxy.”
Close-ups of the Mandalorians reveal each character’s distinctive armour colouring, with Djarin noting, “What are we? What do we stand for?”
Next up is footage of The Mandalorian and Grogu speeding through hyperspace in the former’s N-1 Starfighter. Djarin says, “Being a Mandalorian’s not just learning about how to fight,” as the wide-eyed youngling stares out of the ship in wonder, “You also have to learn how to navigate the galaxy.” This is the way, indeed.
We then see the N-1 Starfighter landing on what appears to be Nevarro, with the lava flats location seemingly transformed into a bustling city overseen by Carl Weathers’ character, Greef Karga, who is wearing a new ceremonial outfit of state. Of note in the shots can be seen a Kowakian monkey-lizard, R5-D4 and EV-9D9-type droids and a statue of IG-11 standing on top of a pile of Stormtrooper helmets, commemorating the bounty hunter’s sacrifice and the liberation of the city in Season 1.
Cut to the N-1 Starfighter flying through a rainstorm, Emily Swallow’s The Armorer returning and forging something from Beskar and Djarin possibly speaking to her to reveal, “I’m going to Mandalore. So that I may be forgiven for my transgression.” The line refers to the character having admitted to removing his helmet and then being banished from his adopted family in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett. The voiceover ends with a birds-eye view of a wrecked Mandalorian city, where some of the action in the upcoming third season takes place.
Amy Sedaris’ character, Peli Motto, is shown waving at Djarin and Grogu blasting off in the N-1 Starfighter whilst shouting, “May the Force be with you!” It also appears that the ship will be getting a new Astromech droid upgrade, replacing the clear dome on top of the craft.
Quick cuts follow, with shots of Coruscant, Omid Abtahi’s returning Doctor Pershing riding in an open-topped speeder over the city planet and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s New Republic X-wing pilot Carson Teva stating, “There’s something dangerous happening out there. And by the time it becomes big enough for you to act, it’ll be too late.”
The next shot is of Djarin retrieving an old Mandalorian helmet from a pile of ash, what may be a flashback to Order 66 and a group of Jedi Knights preparing to defend the Jedi Temple, plus an aerial dogfight between a squadron of TIE Interceptors and a Mandalorian Fang Fighter (both rumoured to be arriving as LEGO Star Wars sets at some point in 2023).
As the trailer builds, we get to see the interior of what may be a droid workshop, complete with appearances by a couple of Astromechs, an RA-7 protocol droid and even prequel-era B1 Battle Droids.
At the 1:18 mark, multiple Mandalorian warriors are dropped from on high over what looks like Nevarro again, using their jetpacks to slow their ascent. They then engage in battle with an unseen foe and director and writer Jon Favreau’s Paz Vizla also makes a welcome return in the scene. Note that the IG-11 statue from earlier has now been destroyed. Does this possibly suggest the Empire has returned in force to take over the planet once more? During the fighting in the streets, two members of Babu Frikk’s Anzellan species are shown hiding (and cheering) at the events unfolding outside.
With the trailer coming to its climax, we witness Grogu emerging from a dark cave to be confronted by a fearsome new creature. However, the youngling makes short work of his savage adversary, thanks to the use of his growing Force powers.
Whilst there’s no sign of Bo-Katan Kryze, Moff Gideon or Christopher Lloyd’s character in the latest trailer for Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 3, we do know they’ll be appearing at some point in the upcoming series. It’s not yet known if Lucasfilm will release another trailer for the show before it debuts, but there’s certainly a wealth of information contained within the latest promotional video for fans to dissect and discuss before then.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 3 will be launching on Disney+ on March 1, 2023, with new episodes scheduled to drop weekly on the streaming service.
