Wookiee

One of the most beloved and enduring species within the Star Wars universe are the Wookiees. Known for their impressive physical stature and unique communication, Wookiees are a favourite among fans and have made significant contributions to the expansive narrative of Star Wars.

Homeworld: Kashyyyk

Kashyyyk, a planet covered in lush forests and towering trees, serves as the home for the Wookiees. The Wookiees live in villages constructed in the tree canopies, far above the ground level where dangerous creatures lurk. Kashyyyk is located in the Mid Rim, adjacent to the Trandoshan homeworld of Trandosha.

Physical Characteristics

Wookiees are large, bipedal beings, averaging around 2.1 meters in height, although some individuals can grow considerably taller. Their bodies are covered in a thick coat of fur, which varies in colour from individual to individual, but is commonly brown. They possess long, powerful limbs, making them formidable in physical combat. Wookiee life span is also impressive, with many living for several centuries.

Society and Culture

Wookiee society is structured around family units and a strict code of honour. This code, known as the Wookiee Life Debt, compels a Wookiee to devote their life to protecting and serving someone who has saved their life. The most famous example of this is Chewbacca’s life debt to Han Solo.

Their society places a high value on bravery, loyalty, and family, with each Wookiee belonging to a family unit known as a ‘clan’. Leadership within the clan is typically given to the eldest and wisest Wookiee.

The Wookiees in the Star Wars Universe

Introduced in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Chewbacca, the loyal companion of Han Solo, became the face of the Wookiee species for most fans. Chewbacca’s fierce loyalty, impressive strength, and distinctive vocalisations have made him a firm favourite.

The Wookiee species was further explored in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which featured scenes on Kashyyyk during the Clone Wars.

Force Sensitivity

Wookiees are not traditionally associated with the Force within the Star Wars franchise. However, Gungi, a Wookiee Jedi Youngling introduced in “The Clone Wars” animated series, is a notable exception.
