Kylo Ren & Rey

The relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren is one of the central dynamics in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. It’s a complicated bond characterized by conflict, shared power, and eventually, understanding and compassion. Their complex relationship culminates in a shared moment of intimacy in “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” (2019) where the two characters share a kiss.

A Tangled Web: Rey and Kylo Ren’s Relationship

Throughout the sequel trilogy, Rey, the last Jedi, and Kylo Ren, the conflicted heir to the Skywalker lineage, share a unique connection. Their bond deepens over the course of the three movies, despite them being on opposite sides of the galactic conflict.

This bond is known as a “Force Dyad”, a rare occurrence in which two Force-sensitive beings share a unique bond that makes them essentially two parts of the same whole. This connection is deepened by their shared feelings of loneliness and their struggles with identity.

The Climactic Moment in “The Rise of Skywalker”

Their complex relationship reaches a turning point in “The Rise of Skywalker”. During the film’s climax, Rey confronts Emperor Palpatine, while a redeemed Ben Solo, having cast off his Kylo Ren persona, rushes to help her.

After a grueling battle, Rey defeats Palpatine but falls lifeless due to the exertion. Ben Solo then uses a Force healing ability to revive Rey, giving his life energy in the process. As Ben dies in Rey’s arms, they share a brief but tender kiss, a symbol of their connection, understanding, and shared struggles.
