The Darksaber, a unique black-bladed lightsaber, holds a storied history in the Star Wars universe. Created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi, the Darksaber has become a symbol of power and leadership within Mandalorian culture. One of the wielders of this storied weapon was Sabine Wren, a character introduced in the “Star Wars Rebels” animated series. This article will explore how Sabine acquired the Darksaber and eventually passed it on.

How did Sabine Wren get the Darksaber?

In the “Star Wars Rebels” series, Sabine Wren came into possession of the Darksaber in a somewhat unusual way. In the episode “Visions and Voices”, Maul, former Sith Lord, had kept the Darksaber in his lair on the planet Dathomir. Sabine, along with her companions Ezra Bridger and Kanan Jarrus, had an encounter with Maul there. During this encounter, Sabine grabbed the Darksaber and took it with her when they left Dathomir.

Once in her possession, Sabine initially did not want to use the Darksaber, feeling the weight of its symbolic importance. However, with encouragement and training from Kanan, who was a Jedi Knight, she learned to wield the weapon. Sabine’s training with the Darksaber is highlighted in the episode “Trials of the Darksaber”.

How did Sabine Wren lose the Darksaber?

Sabine wielded the Darksaber throughout her mission to unite the Mandalorian clans against the Empire. However, she never considered herself the rightful wielder of the weapon. In the episode “Legacy of Mandalore”, Sabine and her companions traveled to her home planet of Mandalore. There, she fought Gar Saxon, the Imperial Viceroy of Mandalore, in a duel and defeated him, proving herself in the eyes of her people.

However, after defeating Saxon, Sabine chose to pass on the Darksaber. She believed that she was not the leader that Mandalore needed, but she hoped to find that person. Sabine entrusted the Darksaber to Bo-Katan Kryze, a former member of the Death Watch and sister to the late Duchess Satine Kryze of Mandalore. Bo-Katan initially refused to accept the Darksaber, but after witnessing Sabine’s efforts to rally the Mandalorians, she finally accepted the Darksaber and the leadership of Mandalore.

Sabine Wren’s journey with the Darksaber was a crucial part of her character development in “Star Wars Rebels”. While she was initially reluctant to wield the weapon, she ultimately used it to unite her people. When she found a leader she deemed worthy, she passed on the Darksaber, honoring the traditions of her people. This chapter of the Darksaber’s history provides a deeper understanding of Mandalorian culture and Sabine’s pivotal role within it.
