Lucasfilm is said to be actively discussing potential post-sequel trilogy projects, according to Star Wars: The Mandalorian co-creator Jon Favreau.

Despite numerous successful live-action TV shows, Star Wars cinematic releases have stalled since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. A recent report by Variety stated that a number of proposed big screen Star Wars projects have been put on hold for now, including films attached to Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins, with only a movie from Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi said to still be in development.

However, in a new interview with Moovy TV, Star Wars: The Mandalorian co-creator Jon Favreau has revealed that Lucasfilm is in fact actively discussing potential post-sequel trilogy projects. As well as chatting about how the shows he’s working on span a larger period of time than the original trilogy, Favreau also mentioned plans to explore a galaxy far, far away beyond Episode IX are currently being talked about:

“There’s definitely a conversation that’s going on. And then, also what happens after the sequel trilogy,” said Favreau. “Because the sequel trilogy only takes place over the course of a few years. And it’s a big thing on the screen, and it’s very eventful. But it is a relatively brief moment in history over the course of the thousands of years that Star Wars takes place. And so what happens after it is interesting too, and I know that there’s some discussion, exploration going on about what happens after it. So I think that there are certain markers that we have – it’s almost like studying ancient history, where you kind of know a few things that happen, but there’s a lot of murkiness in between, and we just don’t have archaeological evidence in the real world to know exactly what happened, so we kind of connect the dots.”

Favreau will be one of many special guest stars at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 next month and will be taking part in the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase on April 7, where the future of some upcoming projects will be presented.
