The High Republic era, set approximately 200 years before the events of the prequel trilogy, introduced a new era of Star Wars storytelling. Along with new characters, planets, and factions, the High Republic also introduced a unique design for lightsabers.

Design and Features

The High Republic lightsaber design is meant to reflect the era’s focus on peacekeeping and diplomacy. The hilt of the lightsaber is longer and thinner than the ones seen in other Star Wars eras, resembling a rapier or dueling sword. The blade is also thinner, more elegant, and less aggressive-looking, with a pristine white colour.

One of the most distinctive features of the High Republic lightsaber is its use of a crossguard. Unlike the crossguard seen on Kylo Ren’s lightsaber, which was made up of two unstable blades, the High Republic crossguard is a single, stable blade that extends perpendicular to the main blade. This feature is meant to add an extra layer of protection to the wielder’s hands and to help with parrying attacks.

In addition to the crossguard, High Republic lightsabers may also feature ornate designs and embellishments, such as filigree or jewels. These are meant to reflect the Jedi’s focus on art and culture, as well as their more diplomatic approach to problem-solving.

Wielders

The High Republic lightsabers are wielded by members of the Jedi Order during the era, including notable characters such as:

  • Avar Kriss, a Jedi Master and leader of the Starlight Beacon
  • Stellan Gios, a Jedi Master known for his strategic mind and skill with a lightsaber
  • Keeve Trennis, a Padawan with a unique connection to the Force and a talent for using a lightsaber
  • Loden Greatstorm, a Jedi Master and expert in the use of the Force for healing and restoration

These characters, along with many others, use their High Republic lightsabers to defend the galaxy and uphold the Jedi’s ideals of peace and justice.
