An upcoming documentary covering the history of the ill-fated Star Wars Holiday Special has now been revealed.
Those in attendance at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival later this month will be amongst the first to get to watch a new documentary chronicling a very strange period in the history of the Star Wars Saga.
A Disturbance in the Force is directed by Steve Binder and reveals the story behind how the ill-fated Star Wars Holiday Special came to be. The film takes a deep dive into the show’s development and features interviews with a number of celebrities such as ‘Weird’ Al Yankovic, Kevin Smith, Seth Green, Taran Killam any many others. A first-look trailer for the upcoming documentary gives a flavour of what to expect, with the full film being revealed at a special screening at SXSW.
Making its debut on CBS in 1978, the Star Wars Holiday Special was a shock to many fans at the time and has since gone onto become an embarrassing reminder of what can potentially go wrong with the franchise, if left in the wrong creative hands. The show featured live-action appearances from many of the Star Wars cast, including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrier Fisher, alongside animated sequences (one of which introduced Boba Fett), song and dance numbers and light-entertainment celebs of the time.
The first showing of A Disturbance in the Force will take place at SXSW on March 11 at 8.45pm, and tickets for the event are available right here.
