Background and Role in Rogue One
Admiral Raddus played a pivotal role in the Battle of Scarif, the climactic battle of Rogue One. He commanded the Rebel fleet in their attack on the Imperial forces on the planet Scarif, providing air support for the ground assault led by Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor. Raddus also served as a source of inspiration and morale for the Rebel troops, as he rallied them to fight for the greater good of the galaxy.
Fate in Rogue One
During the Battle of Scarif, Admiral Raddus’s flagship, the Profundity, was disabled by an Imperial Star Destroyer. Rather than surrender, Raddus ordered the ship to ram into the Star Destroyer, causing both ships to crash onto the planet’s surface. While Raddus survived this initial impact, it’s then shown that the Death Star emerges from hyperspace.
The Death Star disables the Profundity before it can escape and Darth Vader boards the ship along with Stormtroopers, who presumably kill everyone on board. Nonetheless, Raddus succeeded in his mission to transmit the Death Star plans to Princess Leia, earning him a heroic legacy within the world of Star Wars.
Canon Status
Admiral Raddus’s fate has been left ambiguous, as it was not explicitly shown onscreen whether he survived the crash of the Profundity. However, in the 2017 novelisation of Rogue One, it is confirmed that Raddus died in the impact.
