In Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the journey to Exegol, the hidden world of the Sith, is facilitated by ancient devices called Sith Wayfinders.

The Enigmatic Sith Wayfinders

Sith Wayfinders are small, pyramid-shaped devices that project a holographic map when activated. These tools are deeply connected to the dark side of the Force, and very few exist in the galaxy. The maps they project provide a route through the treacherous space and gravity wells that protect Exegol, located deep in the Unknown Regions.

The Hunt for the Wayfinders

Two Wayfinders are known to exist in the Star Wars universe. One belonged to Emperor Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, and was kept in his throne room on the second Death Star. The other was in the possession of Darth Vader, and it was hidden in his castle on the lava-world of Mustafar.

In The Rise of Skywalker, both Rey and Kylo Ren seek the Wayfinders to find their way to Exegol. Kylo Ren obtains Vader’s Wayfinder early in the film, while Rey’s quest to find the other Wayfinder forms a significant part of the film’s narrative.

The Importance of Wayfinders in Star Wars

The Sith Wayfinders, serving as compasses to the hidden world of Exegol, play a crucial role in The Rise of Skywalker. They add a layer of intrigue and mysticism to the movie, drawing on the rich lore of the Sith and their secretive nature. The quest for these Wayfinders drives the plot forward, leading to the climactic confrontation on Exegol and underlining the lengths that characters must go to uncover the secrets hidden in the farthest reaches of the galaxy.
